The Starbucks Shops in Safeway's Family of Supermarkets
The Safeway family of supermarkets has thousands of locations across the United States, with many of them containing a Starbucks outpost within. The partnership began at the end of 2004, in preparation for Safeway's 2005 rebranding campaign. Starbucks became a critical part of the supermarket's success in the following years, as shoppers enjoyed being able to pick up a signature Starbucks beverage while doing their regular grocery shopping. This was made all the more convenient with the advent of shopping carts featuring a cup holder built right in, which was intended to increase the comfort of store visitors and is credited with turning Safeway into a lifestyle grocery brand. By the end of 2005, it was not uncommon to see shoppers of Safeway, Albertsons, and Vons strolling down the supermarket aisles with a piping hot cup of Starbucks in hand.
Starbucks at Safeway
The Safeway Starbucks locations saw some of the first pilot tests of the Starbucks partnership, and this is where the shopping cart with a cupholder first got its start in 2005. By March of 2022, some 17 years later, there were a reported 899 Safeway locations, many of which contained Starbucks outposts brewing fresh coffee all throughout the day.
Starbucks at Albertsons
After its successful pilot, the Starbucks partnership soon expanded into Albertsons. In-store Starbucks shops began popping up at many of the chain's 2,200 grocery stores, enabling customers to enjoy their favorite Starbucks beverages while doing their grocery shopping.
Starbucks at Vons
With the Starbucks partnership in full swing, Vons also began installing Starbucks in-store coffee shops throughout its 325 locations. Today, most Vons stores feature fully operational Starbucks cafes, much to the delight of customers who love the convenience of grabbing a fresh cup of coffee during their shopping trip.

Earning Rewards at Starbucks in Safeway, Albertsons & Vons
One of the biggest benefits of the Starbucks partnership with Safeway, Vons, and Albertsons, is that you can double-dip by earning rewards in both loyalty programs. On September 3, 2010, approximately 6 years after the partnership was formed, Starbucks and Safeway announced that you can simultaneously earn points toward Safeway's just for U loyalty program and Starbucks Rewards with a single purchase at an in-store cafe. In order to be properly credited in both programs, be sure to identify yourself as a just for U member and make payment with the Starbucks App. Nearly all purchases are included, with the exception of gift card purchases, which will not earn you Starbucks Stars.
Both Starbucks and Safeway's family of brands are known for having strong loyalty programs, which reward their customers for their repeat purchases. The grocery chain's
just for U Rewards program enables you to earn free gas or groceries, while
Starbucks Rewards sees loyal customers rack up 'Stars' for free food and beverages at Starbucks. In May of 2013, about two and a half years after announcing the rewards program partnership for purchases made in the in-store cafes, Starbucks also began offering Rewards Stars on packaged coffee that is purchased from within the grocery store itself.
Starbucks Home Brew at Safeway's Family of Supermarkets
Starbucks has been selling its coffee in grocery stores since the middle of 2003, and Safeway's entire family of supermarkets carries multiple Starbucks products. You can visit any Acme Market, Albertsons, Carrs, Jewel-Osco, Pavilions, Randalls, Safeway, Shaw's, Star Market, Tom Thumb, and Vons location, and you'll find a full selection of Starbucks packaged goods. Best sellers include
Starbucks K-Cup Pods, which are available in 15 different varieties, and Starbucks ground coffee. In all, there are 89 different packaged Starbucks products sold at the supermarket chain, not including items sold at the Starbucks in-store coffee shops.
Starbucks Signature Aisles in Safeway, Albertsons & Vons
In September 2013, Starbucks and Safeway completed a deal that enabled Starbucks to install 'Signature Aisles' in Safeway, Vons, Albertsons, and other grocery stores in Safeway's family of brands. Separate from the in-store coffee shops which sell fresh-brewed coffee, these kiosks are more like glorified grocery store end caps which are stocked with Starbucks packaged goods and outfitted with prominent Starbucks branding, in line with its famous coffee shop design. An initial pilot included two-dozen kiosks in Safeway and Vons, with more than 75 following within the span of a year. Customers can pick up a large variety of Starbucks products from the Signature Aisles, as well as free materials that explain which coffee beans they're purchasing and how those beans were sourced.
